If you want to save your game with activated cheats, you should definitely use a separate memory slot. Important NOTE: Since activated cheats can prevent the unlocking of achievements and successes and your crime rating drops when using cheats, you should save your game status before using cheats. A message in the upper left corner of the screen confirms the successful entry of the cheat.
This works differently than with the GTA 3 cheats of the Xbox versions while you are in the pause menu.
